Skin Care for Your Skin Type

You’re uniquely beautiful, so why settle for skin care that’s ordinary? Your skin deserves special care, and with the products and services offered at East Cooper Plastic Surgery (ECPS) Aesthetics, we are here to help find the best treatments for you!

Skin type varies from person to person, which means skin care should as well. To understand your skin and its needs, we use the Fitzpatrick scale, a system that divides skin types into six categories based on each type’s appearance and reaction to the sun. This method has been used since the 1970s to analyze an individual’s skin structure and how this impacts their risk of sun damage.

But, even if you're not a skincare specialist or dermatologist, the Fitzpatrick scale can still work for you because it provides a great deal of information about how to care for your skin.

Here at ECPS Aesthetics, we work with our favorite skincare brand, IS Clinical, to offer in-office and at-home treatments for everyone.

The PRODIGY peel systems are great solutions for many areas of concern, including signs of aging, fine lines and wrinkles, mild to moderate acne, scarring, and pigment irregularities. The P2 PRODIGY peel is a superficial peel, the mildest peel we offer, that targets issues within the outermost layer of the skin. The P3 peel is stronger formula used to treat stubborn blemishes by removing deeper layers of skin. Both the P2 and P3 systems use resorcinol, lactic acid, and salicylic acid, combined with a powerful salicylic “booster," to create an innovative formula that provides enhanced skincare benefits.

When deciding which system is best for you, the ideal choice depends on your skin type. The P2 system is great for all Fitzpatrick skin types, while the P3 peel is more suitable for Fitzpatrick types I, II, and III. People with skin types IV, V, and VI run the risk of developing hyperpigmentation from deeper peels, so this treatment can actually end up causing more problems than they fix.

All skin types react differently to the sun, and while lighter skin tones tend to burn more easily and suffer more extensive long-term damage if not properly protected, everyone should still protect their skin everyday. Even if your skin doesn't show it, sun damage affects all of us, and it can have some pretty severe consequences later on.

Melanin is the pigment in the skin that's responsible for skin tone, tanning, and natural protection. Fairer skin types always need a high SPF because they naturally produce less melanin, while darker skin tones with more melanin are protected using a lower SPF.

IS Clinical has sunscreen that keep all skin types looking healthy and beautiful. Created for daily use and extended outdoor protection, the ECLIPSE SPF 50+ offers water-resistant UVA/UVB protection that is lightweight and nurturing. This formula is especially perfect for fair skin types that need a substantial amount of sun protection.

The lower SPF in the EXTREME PROTECT SPF 30 makes this formula more suitable for darker skin tones. While defending against sun damage, this formula also works to hydrate, smooth, and diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

While we all desire flawless skin, uneven skin tone can be an issue for many of us. These concerns affect some people more because of their skin type. As a result of higher melanin levels, skin types IV, V, and VI often struggle with pigment inconsistencies, including hyperpigmentation.

The BRIGHTENING COMPLEX from IS Clinical is safe and effective for improving the appearance of uneven skin tone. Using a unique blend of brightening ingredients with pharmaceutical-grade botanicals, this formula targets the main causes of skin tone irregularities to exfoliate, rejuvenate, and hydrate the skin.

The greater amount of melanin in darker skin types also makes them more prone to visible and prominent scarring. Fortunately, the Secret RF microneedling device we use at ECPS Aesthetics is the perfect in-office treatment for this concern. Secret RF is a minimally invasive treatment that combines traditional microneedling and radiofrequency technology to revitalize the skin from below its surface.

Secret RF is useful for concerns that affect fairer skin types as well. This device is great for treating signs of sun damage and photoaging, common issues for people with lighter skin tones. Luckily, Secret RF is suitable for all skin types with a minimal risk of hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation.

Each person’s skin is unique, and knowing your skin type can help you learn how to nourish your skin correctly. And, we are here to help! Call us and schedule an appointment at ECPS Aesthetics today!
